Junior Awards

The USTA Texas Awards honor junior players throughout the state for their tennis prowess, as well as their sportsmanship on the court.

John McFarlin Award

Established by John R. McFarlin of San Antonio in 1965, this award is presented to the outstanding junior boy in Texas who exemplifies outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, civic responsibility, character and a good tennis ranking due to superior tournament play.

2021 Winner: Lucas Brown (Plano)

 

Mary Lowdon Award

Created by the Maureen Connolly Brinker Foundation in 1972, this award honors an outstanding junior girl in Texas who has shown exceptional ability, a good ranking, a willingness to work with up-and-coming players, cooperation and proper respect, and a sportsmanlike and competitive spirit.

Maureen Connolly Brinker Award

Established in 1975 and presented annually, this award honors an 18s Girl for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner: Katie Garofolo-Ro (Houston)

 

Art Foust Sportsmanship Awards

Established in 1988 and presented annually, this award honors an 18s Boy for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

 

2021 Winner: Lucas Brown (Plano)

Zina Garrison Sportsmanship Award

Established in 2006 and presented annually, this award honors a 16s Girl for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

Bob McKinley Sportsmanship Award

Established in 2005 and presented annually, this award honors a 16s Boy for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner - Ted Gershon (Austin)

 

Barbara Smith Sportsmanship Award

Established in 2019 and presented annually, this award honors a 14s Girl for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner - Nadia Valdez (San Antonio)

 

Paul Christian Sportsmanship Award

Established in 2019 and presented annually, this award honors a 14s Boy for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner - Qasym Dar (Houston)

 

Emily Schaefer Sportsmanship Award

Established in 2019 and presented annually, this award honors a 12s Girl for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner - Ashlyn Burrows (Richardson)

 

Ken McAllister Sportsmanship Award

Established in 2019 and presented annually, this award honors a 12s Boy for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by players competing in The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner - Mason Vaughan (Austin)

 

Clarence Mabry Sportsmanship Award

Inaugurated in 1990 and presented annually, this award honors a 12s-18s Boy for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by the Tournament Committee at The Texas Slam.

2021 Winner - Decided at Conclusion of Tournament

Nancy Jeffett Sportsmanship Awards

Inaugurated in 1990 and presented annually, this award honors a 12s-18s Girl for outstanding sportsmanship and fair play both on and off the court. Final selection is made by the Tournament Committee at The Texas Slam.

 

2021 Winner - Decided at Conclusion of Tournament

 

Chuck McKinley Award

Inaugurated in 2001, this award honors a USTA Texas junior tennis player who achieved the most outstanding results at the National and/or International level during the previous calendar year.
